Incredibly rare sizes and finish, 12x18, 8x12, and 14x14 in original Thermo Gloss Natural Maple. In Ludwig catalogs of the 1960's, the Jazzette Outfit was only offered in "mahogany, maple or lacquer finish," making this set all the more rare as an actual catalog example. Not only were very few numbers of Jazzette sets produced...60's Ludwigs in Natural Maple in general are quite rare. The two combined make this kit an extremely desirable collector's item.
The Jazzette was the preferred set of Roy Haynes during the late 60's and early 70's, and can be heard on such landmark recordings as Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs." Several ads were released at the time, showing Roy with his Jazzette set.
These drums have minor to average use wear. The original lacquered maple has taken on a beautiful, honey-gold tone, with scuffs, scrapes, and dings typical of a natural maple finish. There are no extra holes or problems. The serial numbers are as follows:
- 8 x 12 - 687029
- 14x14 - 684814
- 12x18 - 697558
Such close numbers indicate a factory matched set. The floor tom and small tom are both date stamped MAR 24 1969. Bass drum and floor tom both have a natural maple interior, and the small tom has a mahogany interior, both correct for the time. Chrome is in excellent condition, all hardware is correct and functions smoothly. Most important, these drums sound incredible...beautiful vintage Ludwig tone, punchy bass drum a la Roy Haynes that can only be found in a 12x18.
